Ideas for a logo, colored pencil, 2013.
A patron, who has purchased work from me before, needs a logo for a book of poetry she is writing and wants to publish. The logos are all in a simplified style. “Simplified” style is when the parts of the subject (in this case, trees, land & water) are rendered very simply with little detail. These logos are also in abstract style-focused on only shapes in some areas. They were all done in late August & part of September. I usually do digital logos using Adobe CS, but the client wanted these illustrated.
The client liked the second image better, but she wanted more leaves, thicker tree trunk & more roots. So I added that. So that image was transformed into the image you see at the bottom. The client then let me know she wants the tree to have a more “real” look. So I have to render this tree in the style of realism or even naturalism (which takes realism a step further). Of course, those styles will require more detail and a little more time to complete.
The logo is inspired from Psalm 23, which I and many are familiar with and has inspired many with encouragement:
“A psalm of David.
1) The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2) He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3) he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4) Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,**
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5) You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6) Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
